527s in ohio and obama

In barack obama, billary, hillary rodham clinton, politics on 20 February 2008 at 10:44 pm

so according to abc news a pro-hillary rodham clinton 527 (a group operating independently of a politician but spends an unlimited amount of dough) is planning on running a series of ads trying to convince voters in ohio and texas and any other state that will listen that politicians shouldn’t be eloquent. well, george w. bush surely isn’t. i guess that must mean something.

american presidents used to give good speeches. just look at old speeches from george washington, abraham lincoln, thomas jefferson, and ronald reagan. jimmy carter was a big snoozer. george h.w. bush was too. both of them only lasted 1 term.

the u.s. presidency is a weak position. the founding fathers intended it that way. the president can ’set’ policy. but congress doesn’t have to work with him if they don’t like him. and the only way to push anything through is to use the big schmooze. meaning, you’ve got to convince the american people and you also have to convince congress.

the economist cover story obama

In barack obama, publishing on 15 February 2008 at 7:02 pm

not only does the economist try to reinforce the podcast they did with bob kerrey (former senator from nebraska) by mentioning (seemingly off-handedly) that barack obama grew up in a muslim country yet not pointing out that he is christian, the article also. well, just rambles. apparently the journalist never bothered to look at obama’s website and actually read his policy issues. for shame. the magazine lost it’s “mo” a few years back when the old editor retired.

obamamania and momentum

In barack obama, bill clinton, billary, hillary rodham clinton, politics on 14 February 2008 at 9:36 pm

obama has swept the last 8 primaries and caucuses. he’s got the big mo and he’s hoping billary clinton will
get their alamo.

so the clintons are trying to go back to the playbook they pulled out in january as billary sought to win the new hampshire primary after a crushing defeat in iowa. basically, they are trying to say ‘boy, obama sure does give good speeches, but where are the details.’

there was a good article in the new york observer about 8 months ago with michael dukakis. remember him? well, he famously lost a 17 point lead to george bush the elder back in 1988. his campaign stump speech, much like billary’s, focused on how qualified and confident he was. in retrospect, he and a lot of dems realize the reason he lost, gore lost, and kerry lost –all against week republican candidates, is because they didn’t know how to give a really good stump speech and get people all riled up. they focused too much on details. which of course is important. but when you’re packing a stadium of 20K, like obama, don’t you want to give them something to take home and talk about?? and if you want the minute details you can go to barack obama’s website.

but now that hillary has the

obama clinton delegate count

In barack obama, billary, politics on 13 February 2008 at 6:42 am

with 70 delegates at stake in maryland, 15 delegates at stake in washington dc, and 83 delegates at stake in virgina, barack obama swept the so-called potomac primary. winning 60% to 37% in maryland, 75% to 24% in dc and 64% to 35% in virginia.

obama has 1078 delegates to billary clinton’s 969. this is without superdelegates. which some news sites are counting, but should not because superdelegates, which consist of present and former democratic politicians and flunkies, such as DNC chairman, howard dean, can change their votes at anytime.

hillary loans her campaign 5 mill

In bill clinton, billary, politics on 8 February 2008 at 9:45 am

so let’s do the math. billary clinton has been in the senate for almost 8 years. as a senator, she earns $165K before taxes. if we multiply that by 7, well i just don’t get 5M. so where did the money come from? her book advance, which if i remember correctly was around 4M. but those numbers are always inflated and could’ve been more like 2M.but we all know that bill clinton earns between 200K and 300K giving speeches. but according to campaign finance law, he is only allowed to donate $2300 to his wife’s campaign. if i remember correctly, hillary and bill left the white house in 2001 with so many legal bills, they were effectively a step above poor white trash. sure does raise a lot of questions. and is also making some of hillary clinton’s donors nervous.

delegate count obama 589 clinton 551

In barack obama, billary, hillary rodham clinton, politics on 6 February 2008 at 7:45 am

here’s the state by state tracking by real clear politics. i’ve subtracted the superdelegates, because these numbers are fluid and can change from day to day.

the race in california, where billary clinton leads by about 300K votes with only 33% of precincts reporting, is not over. barack obama pulled out a come-from-behind win in Missouri, winning the state 49 to 48. obama won the majority of his states with wider margins than clinton. he also won across the country, with clinton having left a gaping whole in the mid-west.

early voting in california may have hurt obama. people started casting their ballots january 7.
