it’s one thing to encourage americans to buy american made car. it’s another thing to demand that american companies only use iron and steel made in the u.s. for the infrastructure projects that are included in the 800 billion dollar plus stimulus bill that was approved by the u.s. house of representatives last year.
smoot hawley kicked off a trade war in the 1930s which pushed an already sensitive economy further into a world wide recession

berlin fashion week, bread and butter berlin, hugo boss, karl heinz müller, karl heinz mueller, tempelhof airport, the future party
In fashion on 29 January 2009 at 3:27 pm
the theme for the january tradeshow was ‘the united nations of bread and butter.’ the trade show, which initially launched in cologne germany, then moved to berlin, and seemingly had found a home in barcelona, is moving back to berlin in july.
yesterday, the managing director and founder of the event, karl heinz-müller held a press conference announcing the move back to city. an event staged at the recently closed tempelhof airport, originally designed by architect albert speer, synthesized the best of berlin with music and an eclectic mischmash of people. apparently the people at hugo boss weren’t excited by the fact that their show (which launches berlin fashion week) and party started last night at 8.30pm while the bread and butter party kicked off at 9pm. the BBB party was far more entertaining and the average age was most likely about 10 – 15 years younger than the hugo boss affair.
pictures will be added later.
harvard business school, Philip Delves Broughton, the cauldron of capitalism
In publishing on 27 January 2009 at 5:04 pm
–bought this book, ‘what they teach you at harvard business school: my two years inside the cauldron of capitalism,’ toward the end of last summer after reading this review in the financial times. as i was just starting business school, i thought it could be a good companion piece. but with all the finance and accounting homework, i had zero time. now after exams, i have a little breather. and i see that the book is totally worth the money. amongst other things, it points out that frat culture that is the american business school cutlure. and it mentions CEOs like skilling (aka, the enron dude) and others who have commited massive corporate failures were harvard MBAs. he also questions the validity that the school is actually international given that the majority of the international students either lived in the u.s. for an extended period of time at some point, or attended undergraduate school in the united states.
i’m midway through the book and can’t wait to get to the end. author philip delves broughton’s book should be required reading for anyone contemplating attending graduate school and dropping more than 100K to do it. i believe the article also points out that the title of the book in the u.s. is slightly different from the european edition. ‘what they teach you in the cauldron of capitalism’ has been conveniently left off. the book is published by penguin in the united kingdom.
